Travel Purpose: leisure

Positive: We stayed in several riad on a trip around Morocco and this was our favourite. It's an amazingly restored C13th riad which felt beautifully authentic in every room we accessed. Our bedroom was gorgeous with a huge, exceptionally comfy bed. The owner could not have been more welcoming and kind, particularly as we were there during Aid al Kebir and there was a lot going on. She was so considerate in making sure we had a quiet room and food on the holiday when places were generally shut. We also got lots of tips from staff member Zack who spoke fantastic English. It was incredibly hot during our stay and, thankfully, the riad has excellent air-conditioning so we were able to head back and cool down. The walk to the old medina is about 15-20 mins (unless you get lost in the narrow streets) and you are close to the ring road in the opposite direction so, although cars can't come up to the riad itself, you can walk down in a few minutes and pick up a cheap local taxi. Fes is quite an experience and feels like going back to medieval times. The narrow, crowded medina can feel claustrophobic so would recommend taking your time, always making sure you have water in your bag and a big hat - but not too big, some of the passageways can be as little as 50cm wide! The old Jewish Mellal is also worth a visit to see some very different architecture and there's a lovely garden by the Place des Alouites as well as a great cafe/brasserie in the square. If you have time, we would highly recommend booking into the riad hammam - we had a fantastic scrub and massage from Fatima and her colleague.
