Positive: Our room (#12) was beautiful, bright, and airy, with blue-and-white painted furniture and plasterwork, and windows with a view of the mountains and the hilltop Spanish mosque. Totally worth hauling our heavy bags up two flights of stairs. We loved the room so much we extended our stay by a night, which was easy since the front-desk staff spoke English well. The beds were firm, just as we like them. The location of the hotel is perfect, just outside the medina on a main street, so a taxi from the bus station can bring you right to the door. (If you’re driving, there’s overnight parking in a lot under the Chinese restaurant a few doors down from the hotel.) The hotel is opposite the back walls of the Kasbah, so it’s a short walk to the main medina plaza, which is lined with shops and cafes. You’ll find the best restaurants off the plaza, such as al Witam, Palacio al Andalus, and Ben Tarik. The Chinese restaurant down the block from the hotel is also first-rate. (We were so surprised to find such good Chinese food in a small Moroccan town that we ate there twice.)

Negative: The wifi worked very badly in the room, and our Maroc Telecom cell reception wasn’t good enough for a hot spot. That was a pain because we needed to do a lot of work and trip planning while in Chefchaouen. The wifi was better on the beautiful rooftop terrace (no shade, alas) and in the breakfast lounge.
